Our Mission

Alliance for Multicultural Community Services, Houston TX

AMCS's mission is to provide comprehensive services to refugees, immigrants and low-income residents of Harris County in order to enhance the process of their cultural adjustment and economic self-sufficiency. These services are delivered in a manner that is linguistically and culturally appropriate and are designed to empower individuals, families and communities to succeed. Over the past 25 years, AMCS's programs have included Refugee Employment, Refugee Resettlement, Refugee Case Management, Community Employment and Training, Youth Empowerment Programs, IDA, Micro-enterprise programs Refugee Transportation Program, Immigration Counseling, Interpretation, and Health Education and Advocacy Services to over 90,000 refugees, immigrants and low-income citizens.

Alliance Strategic Vision

Alliance for Multicultural Community Services was founded in July of 1985 through the integration of Cambodian, Ethiopian, Laotian and Vietnamese refugee organizations into a Mutual Assistance Association. Since then, the Alliance has expanded to serve individuals of all ethnicities, both refugees and low-income residents of the Gulfton neighborhood where we are located, providing services to approximately 6,500 clients annually. In spite of the tough economic times which make our refugee self-sufficiency work more difficult, we are working hard to expand our services and to improve our financial and administrative position.

The Alliance and Refugee Resettlement

People become refugees for many reasons - perhaps they have been forced into a crowded camp where survival is dependent on international aid, perhaps they live in constant fear because their ethnicity or religion makes them the target of attacks, perhaps their homeland has been destroyed by war and the land no longer produces. Whatever the reason, our great nation has entered into a pact to offer a home to individuals from these displaced groups.

In a sense, the people we serve are driven to the United States by global instability and crisis, but deciding to resettle here is also a choice - a proactive step towards a better life for their families. The Alliance for Multicultural Community Services exists to ensure that the United States fulfills its promise of offering opportunity, and to help refugees to take advantage of that opportunity, reinventing themselves as self-sufficient citizens of a new land.

The Alliance is currently the largest refugee resettlement agency in Texas, in terms of both range of services and number of clients served. The need of our clients is immense as they generally arrive in their new homeland with no possessions, no knowledge of US systems, and no English language skills. The need of the agency mirrors that of our clients. We can always do more for them. We hope you will explore our website and consider donating to support our work.
